Philosophy and Science as Starting Points

The existence of God cannot be proved the same way you prove a chemistry experiment — God, if he exists, is not an object within the universe but the ground of its existence. However, there are powerful arguments that point toward a Creator, arguments taken seriously by philosophers and scientists of the highest caliber.

The Cosmological Argument

Everything that begins to exist has a cause. The universe began to exist (confirmed by the Big Bang — the universe had a definite beginning). Therefore, the universe has a cause. That cause must be outside time, space, and matter — which is a remarkably good description of a transcendent, personal Creator.

The Fine-Tuning Argument

The physical constants of the universe are calibrated with extraordinary precision for life to be possible. Physicist Roger Penrose calculated that the odds of the universe's initial entropy being what it is by chance are 1 in 10 to the power of 10^123. Even atheist scientists acknowledge this is staggering. The best explanation many find is intentional design.

The Moral Argument

We all behave as though some things are objectively wrong — genocide, child abuse, gratuitous cruelty. If objective moral facts exist, they require a grounding that transcends human preference or evolution. A personal, morally perfect God provides that grounding. Atheism struggles to explain why anything is truly wrong rather than merely unfashionable.

The Evidence of Consciousness

The existence of subjective experience — that there is "something it is like" to be you — is deeply puzzling on a purely materialist account. Consciousness, rationality, and the sense of beauty and meaning all sit more comfortably in a universe made by a rational, personal God.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." — Psalm 19:1

Faith Is Not Blind

None of these arguments individually constitutes proof. But together they build a cumulative case. Christian faith is not a leap in the dark — it is trust placed in a Person who has given us ample reason to trust him.
