Shared Foundations

Before the differences: Catholics and Protestants share far more than they divide on. Both affirm the Trinity, the incarnation, the resurrection of Christ, the authority of Scripture, salvation through Christ, and the physical return of Jesus. These are the essentials of historic Christian faith.

Scripture and Tradition

Catholic view — Scripture and Sacred Tradition together constitute the full deposit of faith, interpreted authoritatively by the Magisterium (the Church's teaching office). Neither Scripture nor Tradition stands alone.

Protestant view — Scripture alone (Sola Scriptura) is the final and supreme authority in matters of faith. Tradition is valuable but always subordinate to and judged by Scripture.

Salvation and Justification

Catholic view — Justification is a process that involves both faith and cooperation with grace, mediated through the sacraments of the Church. Salvation can be lost through mortal sin.

Protestant view — Justification is by faith alone (Sola Fide) — a forensic declaration of righteousness received through trust in Christ alone, not through sacraments or works.

The Role of the Pope and Church Authority

Catholic view — The Pope, as successor to Peter, holds supreme authority in matters of faith and morals. When speaking ex cathedra on doctrine, papal pronouncements are held to be infallible.

Protestant view — There is no single earthly head of the Church. Authority rests in Scripture, with varying structures of church government across denominations.

Mary and the Saints

Catholic view — Mary holds a special intercessory role as Theotokos ("God-bearer") and was assumed bodily into heaven. The saints can be asked to intercede for the living.

Protestant view — Mary is honored but not venerated. Prayer is directed to God alone; the mediation of saints is not taught in Scripture.
